This month our industry interview is with Dr Tony Kilcoyne. Illegal tooth whitening case reopened
A Lancaster based beautician who was find £3,500 for illegally whitening teeth is due to have her case reopened. Hayley Wilding of Field House Lane in Pilling did not attend the hearing at Lancaster Magistrates’ Court and was found guilty in her absence of unlawfully practising dentistry and carrying on the business of dentistry whilst working at Vanity Salon in Ullswater Road, Lancaster. However, the case has since been reopened. The charges were brought were brought against the beautician by the GDC who is cracking down on unregulated teeth whiteners after last years landmark ruling in the High Court. 10% of dental graduates facing difficulties finding employment
Although unemployment rates are almost back at the BOE target level of 7%, it is still very difficult for graduates to find jobs in the current environment. This also applies to dental graduates and was highlighted by a recent BDA survey. The survey found that more than one in ten young dentists completing their vocational or foundation training are struggling to find permanent jobs. The research adds to previous concerns regarding potential employment problems in dentistry fuelled by the successive growing proportion of trainees. Can periodontal treatment help diabetic control?
Even if you trained as a dentist more than 20 years ago, the link between periodontitis and diabetes was something that was widely established. Over the last 20 years experts have identified mechanisms for this link, and established an overall better understanding. Diabetes is known to be an inflammatory disease, as is periodontitis. It is now well documented that the oral inflammation from active periodontitis contributes to an elevation in inflammatory markers in the bloodstream, which in turn can trigger inflammation elsewhere, including pancreatic function for example, which is part of diabetic pathogenesis. The Wolf of Wall Street went to dental school
Jordan Belfort, the protagonist in Martin Scorsese’s latest film The Wolf of Wall Street, started dental school before dropping out to become a crook Wall Street trader. His mother had wanted him to become a doctor but he overslept his medical school entrance exams and went to dental school instead. In 1984, on his first day at Baltimore College of Dental Surgery the Dean told the class that their training would be rewarded with “a life of reasonable comfort.” The dean went on to say that “The golden age of dentistry is over.
